As suspected Tottenham have sealed the signing of Blackburn defender Ryan Nelsen following international clearance.

Now can somebody help me out here, this guy is like 34 and never really been known as one of the top defenders in the Premier League, sure it’s clear we need a bit of cover after letting Bassong and Charlie leave but I was under the impression we were only looking for players that would improve our squad.

The New Zealander can play centre or right of defence but like Saha has struggled to find fitness. Even Iain Dowie poked fun at it when he was asked if it was a good deal he replied “it is for him”

Somebody help me out here….

  1. Kaboul – cant really play with daws as they both need an experienced strong head with them. Nelson isn’t the best defender but I think he is the sort who can let kaboooom and or Dawson play their own game when paired with them

  2. ill help you…hes a strong …..solid defender…..with…..determination too.. to work for the club……………next

  3. also at 34 (a great age) his head knows the deal…….unlike some of the kids who cant keep up mentally……honestly why would redknapp consider a carthorse ?….if he was wrong we would not be third !?!

  4. Whilst not doubting Harry, this signing leaves me distinctly underwhelmed. It looks obvious to me that DL is tightening the purse strings until he knows whether Harry will still be here in the Summer. I expect huge signings in the Summer, our outgoings in January covered our hole spending for last Summer so we simply must have money to spend.

    • thats right change the squad……without care and attention and spend money on names (who?) to replace a team with great spirit……….reversing progress……..??!……..better to sculpture the requirements (youth and academy development / new stadium and remain consistent (not selling modric etc)for the champs league….building the blocks aand getting champs league money and a target for a five year period…..arsenal could well lose the champs tv money and may take 3 years getting back………due to liverpool and us etc….as we know getting there is tough …staying there is tougher

      • So what do we do then? Sign 33/34 year old players for ever? Look at out transfer dealings the last 2 years and we have spent very little compared to Liverpool who have been without CL football. Arsenal have lost money due to Wenger’s insistence on not splashing the cash. I am not talking about signing players for the sake of it (although that appears to be exactly what we have done in January), I am talking about a top notch CB to replace Ledley/Gallas, a quality Cf to replace Pav. I would rather spend £25M in the summer on one player than £10M each on 3 and this is well within our budget.

  5. we have a dynamic which is making everyone look up ……this being with players bought for a steal….vaart,parker…etc…….so the silly money brigade is not required……neilsen also scores etc see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVmZTgg4Dlc strong at corners?…….tightening the purse strings is right……as we are not owned by an overseas oil company with a limitless cashflow..etc…….the chemistry in the squad is key……the engine and set up under the hood…..wins the drag race

  6. His greatest strength over bassong will be the fact he can sit on the bench as a peripheral squad member but come on when needed and be motivated to play his best game possible, free from the mental distraction of wandering where his career is heading with the team he is part of. He’s been there and got the t shirt so on the very few times he is called on to play he’ll apprieciate his chances and will play free of mental pressure.

  7. has everyone forgot that we dont need a centre back next season!! we’ll get steven caulker back from swansea and his performances for them have been very impressive..so we’ll have a young promising centre back next season!
