Rumours are already starting to take shape regarding the January sales and we’re only just recently having left behind the summer extravaganzas. So with one such transfer speculation specifically being banded around that being the previously covered departure of one Jermaine Defoe to Juventus.I thought that now appeared to be as good a time as any to discuss what seems to most Tottenham fans as the urgent need to find the perfect striker one that will fit around the much talked about five man midfield and although this mysterious fellow is as yet reluctant to make himself  known to Mr Redknapp and Levy respectively,I feel we must prepare ourselves to lose one or two of our forwards to make way for this superman the question is who?

Shall we then begin with the point of the rumour and take a quick look at Jermain Defoe. What can you say about this little fellow when he’s on form he probably comes close to being one of the most lethal strikers in the Premiership 92 goals for Spurs in two stays and an ever present threat to most if not all defences.

He loves to play on the shoulder of the last defender, always looking for those channels in which to run to get a shot off at goal something which tends to rile a lot of Tottenham fans as he is often criticised for not taking the better option when another player might be in a more dangerous position.A possible starter for the new vacancy? perhaps as his performance in a 4,4,1,1 for Capello’s England against Bulgaria did him the world of good.

Then there is Peter Crouch often much ridiculed for his physique by both home and away supporters alike he also seems to take a lot of flak for seemly being the sole reason for that long ball demon which often raises it’s head when Peter is on the field, although when playing for England the malevolent force is not often seen and with 16 goals to his name in the lilly white not forgetting of course that finest of hat tricks against Young Boys of Bern in our Champions League taster he appears to have the knack of scoring important goals for both club and country.

Now with Crouches height and close ball control ability he should be perfect for the lone front man role and perhaps with a little more time playing in that position he might grow into it,unfortunately time is the one thing that most mangers lack so would Harry be prepared to persevere with such an experiment? I feel we may never find out.

Now we turn our attention to the enigma that is Roman Pavlyuchenko the online dictionary defines the use of enigma as.”A person of puzzling or contradictory character:To me he has always been an enigma, one minute completely insensitive, the next moved to tears”.

Well to begin with let me remove the comparison toward his personality as I neither know the man well enough to comment nor would I should I be around him, although what I do believe to be similar to the definition is his style of play.On his day there is no one player to touch him you could quite easily compare him with Torres unfortunately however there seems no consistency in his play and his 25 goals in 62 appearances seems to emulate this otherwise he would be perfect for the lone front man.

Next up is Robbie Keane and such a player I have never known that divided opinion amongst a set of fans, although to discuss his ability for this position we must for the time being at least leave to one side our personal likes or dislikes of this Irishman.

Now despite his impressive tally of 121 goals in 293 appearances I feel he is the least likely of the four to be able to take on the mantle of lone front man as he loves to come deep linking the midfield to the attack this though does not mean that he should either leave of his own accord or be sold as I hold this man in high regard. His technical ability is wonderful as is his reading of the game and I only hope that Harry can find some way of playing him in our team, whether that means adapting him into more of a Modric style midfielder I don’t know.

So there we have it and no doubt this has raised more questions than answers but whatever you believe it’s up for discussion.SO WHO STAYS YOU DECIDE.

  1. robbie, next question?

  2. Replacement?

  3. Defoe the lone striker and Rooney playing the free supporting role showed just how predatory our man is. VDV in Rooneys position for us and we will crack top 4 again!

  4. Despite a plethora of supposed ‘big names’ available, clearly there aren’t many that are better than we’ve already got. Should we dispose of any that are mentioned, who’ll replace them? And that’s more the question I’d think.
Keane is my pet hate and has been for many seasons, but from the teams perspective I’d have to consider his replacement in the side and quite frankly I cant. We as a club dont have money to waste nor a huge amount to pay in salary. Secondly because we’ve paid 12million shortly after receiving 20.5 Million, it wont mean that he’s worth anything like that sum in today’s market, perhaps 7 million max. So what are we getting for that as there aren’t too many bargains to be had out there. Unless it’s part of an exchange deal, what’s the point?

  5. Robbie Keane goes. No brainer. As for replacement, we won’t get a decent one for what we get for Keane so Levy will have to open his wallet to subsidise it. I’d personally quite like to see a WHL return for Bobby Zamora.

  6. Defoe looked excellent for England in that role my only concern is a lone striker idealy needs to have reasonable arial ability and Defoe has none, Crouch is the complete opposite, wins most headers but has no pace and cant turn and Keane simply isnt good enough, Pav to me is the most complete striker to play that role. People complain about our failure to land a new stiker but lets look at the facts. The main names being linked to us were Fabiano and Huntelaar. The fee for Fabiano was just ridiculous, only an idiotic club like city would consider paying in excess of £20mill for a player in his 30′s and Huntelaar would have been just as likely to flop as succeed. At first I was a bit frustrated, but now looking back at it theres no point just throwing money away, lets work at improving what we have and if something better comes up in Jan then go for it.

  7. It’s very wet out there. I’m a little worried about Defoe and his groin on that surface.

  8. There dropping like flies in these internationals Dawson,Walcott,Lescott and Coles’ playing with a bionic knee or something.

  9. Fucking internationals. Only two players in the England squad, we had. And who are the only two England players to get injured this week? You fucking guessed it.

  10. What are you on about? Walcott was taken to hospital.
